It’s ghost and goblin time again! Here are some tips from your community health nurse for a fun and safe Halloween.
How to make your costume safe?
- Make sure that drivers can see your child. Use costumes with reflective tape and give each child a flashlight.
- Costumes should be made with fire resistant material—check the label.
- Make sure your child can see. Use face paint instead of masks. Tie hats, wigs, or scarves securely so that they won’t slip over your child’s eyes.
- To prevent falling, costumes should not be longer than your child’s ankle and shoes should fit properly.
How to make trick or treating safe?
- Children should stay in well lit areas and only visit homes that have their outside lights turned on. Children should not go inside any house.
- Before your children eat their candy, make sure you examine it. Throw out any candy that has small holes in the wrappers or torn or loose packages. Cut all fruit open before your children eat it. Throw out any treats that are not wrapped.
- An adult should supervise children under 9 years of age; children over 9 years of age who are not with an adult should be with a group of older, responsible children.
- If you are driving on Halloween night, please be extra careful. Children are excited at Halloween and may forget some of the safety rules.
From the City of Burnaby...
For safety reasons, please do not drop off your children at the door and block the traffic. We almost had an accident with children jumping out of doors and running into cars. We recommend that you please park and walk your children into the gym. Please do what it takes for a safe drop-off and pick-up for not just your own children but for all wings gymnasts. The city thanks you for your cooperation.
From coaches...
Please do have your children go to the bathroom before gymnastics if at possible. If they have to use the bathroom, we need them to please PUT THEIR SHOES on!! We will be nagging and reminding them to do so. They will also need to go with a buddy if they are 10 and younger, if possible, we would prefer them to always go with a buddy regardless of their age. They need to let their coach know before they go anywhere at all times. Christina monitor the comings and goings and will " hurry " the kids out of the bathroom if they seem to be spending too much time in there.
Suit Sale
Hedy will be coming in next week with assorted training suits and shorts in various colours and sizes. Many of these suits were from TipToe Gym wear. There will be special discounts and prices on these suits. If you are interested in a gymnastics suit, we do suggest that you come down between 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. Hedy will also do custom-orders as well.
Miscellaneous
If you want to let us know that your child is late or will be absent, you can leave a message or better yet send us a TEXT MESSAGE to 778-996-9464 and we can pass that message along to your coach. Sending email the morning of the day will not be received in time.
We do have club suits that are sleeveless training tank-style bodysuits, custom made by Tiptoe Gym wear. They are in the club "blue" and the price is $40.00. We have a variety of sizes, and if we do not have the size we will order it in. This suit can be worn by any gymnast in the gym.
We have a new "old" Board of Directors for 2008-2009 . Thank you to them all for stepping forward to volunteer on behalf of all the families so that we may continue to run a good program in the community. Thanks to those who attended our small AGM. Anyone who would like to volunteer, please let us know. All members can be contacted via our club email for any questions, concerns or feedback.

Head Lice
Just a gentle reminder that we would appreciate it if parents would report to us just as you do at school any suspected or actual cases of head lice. We need to maintain a head lice free gym because we have so many children in attendance using all the equipment.
My child has head lice. Why did this happen?
Anyone who has hair can get head lice. They are easily shared between people, by touching heads or sharing combs, brushes or hats with someone who has lice. Lice are common where children play or work closely together. Lice do not cause disease. Socio-economic factors play no part in head lice infestations.
When do I check my child’s head for lice? Check once a week.
How do I check? Use conditioner and wet combing method.
What do I see if my child has head lice?
You will see eggs (nits), small, oval, greyish specks on the hair close to the scalp which cannot be picked off like dandruff. The head lice are tiny, wingless, greyish insects that live and breed only in human hair.
How do I get rid of head lice?
Follow the treatment instructions using wet-combing method or a medicated shampoo.
What happens when a child has head lice at school or at gymnastics?
All children in that class will receive a notice from the school/gymnastics club asking parents to check for head lice. Treatment instructions can be found on the internet. Children must be treated before returning to school or to gymnastics. Please let the teacher/coach know if your child has head lice.

E-Bulletin #3 :October 10
Happy Thanksgiving to all Wings families! Enjoy the long weekend!
We would like to encourage all parents to attend. If you are a Tuesday only parent, you are still invited to attend, as well as to meet your child's coach at their designated times.
We are also looking for some parents who would like to become involved as volunteers on the Board level. The commitment is a monthly meeting and an opportunity to provide feedback and be informed on club business. At this moment, all positions are available for consideration. In great need is a parent with some accounting background to take on the role of Treasurer to oversee the financial reporting done by the Club administrator. The current treasurer is willing to provide assistance whenever needed.
