About Us
Wings Gymnastics is a non-profit society that began in 1980 as Burnaby Unified Gymnastics Society or BUGS. BUGS was granted free access to the Sports Hall in Cameron Recreation Centre twice per week, for a total of four hours, to offer gymnastics programs to Burnaby residents. BUGS had 27 gymnasts and three coaches, including the Head Coach. The partnership between BUGS and Burnaby evolved over the years: the name BUGS changed to Wings, the number of participants and coaches increased, and the free access to the Sports Hall increased from four hours to eight hours.
Our primary mandate is to provide members with safe and enjoyable gymnastics programs at both a recreational and competitive level. We take pride in the fact that we are a family-oriented club with a strong connection to the surrounding communities.
We offer all children, ages 4-18, the opportunity to enjoy gymnastics in a safe and supportive environment, no matter their skill level. In 2012 we aligned ourselves with the Gymnastics BC Play Program - a Gymnast Development Model based on the Long-Term Athlete Development Model in Canada. This program was the result of years of research and has been broken down to include all ages and levels of our sport.
Our Wings programming continues to follow the suggested ages, skills, and progressions based on this well-established model. We feel that it reflects our Wings philosophy of fun and fitness and will help Wings continue to offer the highest quality of programming available.
Wings owns a full complement of gymnastics apparatus. Our coaches are fully certified through the National Coaching Certification Program and are certified with their first-aid. Wings Gymnastics and our coaches are registered members of Gymnastics BC.
